The first of (hopefully) many futuristic cars arrived at our studio in Dunsfold for some protection attention. This BMW i8 which has been sprayed in ‘Frozen Black’; a matte paintwork system! Being matte, protection was high on the new owners list! The best way to protect a car like this is by installing a physical barrier on the paint surface in the form of PPF. Just like with normal paintwork, the surface must been as clean as possible before the film is applied onto the surface. By using Swissvax’s ‘Opaque’ products, we can treat and prepare the paintwork for the application of the film. With it being a matte paint system we must use a specific shampoo (in this case, we used Swissvax’s Opaque shampoo). This will ensure the effective cleansing of the paint surface without damaging it in anyway.
Once clean it was straight into our clean room! The clean room has been designed to be as dust free as possible and can be climate controlled too. This allows us to create the perfect conditions for the film’s application.
What is PPF?
PPF, or Paint Protection Film is a self-healing ‘wrap’ which can be installed onto the majority of your vehicle. It has been designed and developed to sit on top of the paintwork and be as invisible as possible. Where it can, the film will be wrapped around the edge of the panel to make sure there is maximum coverage! Premium Shield’s film comes with a 5 year guarantee and you can find out more about Premium Shield’s film here. To find out more about PPF at Reep, visit our page here. Should any of the film’s we use unfortunately receive a stone chip or other minor mark, the film will heal itself to remove the mark from its surface. It does this through the direct application of heat onto its surface. This can be from the engine,
Like at our other centres, we are able to cut PPF patterns onsite. With a plotter on our site, and full access to Premium Shield’s pattern library, it makes our job a lot easier. As you can see from the gallery, these patterns are cut within a millimetre precision for each panel. Applied the same that normal PPF would be, our fully trained guys had the front end of the car applied in no time!
Have a look through the gallery of final photos. You will see that the film helps to retain the full matte finish of the original paintwork.
